Ardell L. "Putsy" Smith, Sr.

Mr. Smith, 81, Blandburg died peacefully at home Tuesday, April 5, 2016. He was born in Blandburg January 18, 1935 a son of the late Thomas A. and Mildred F. (Briggs) Smith. On July 5, 1956 in Winchester, VA. he married Dorothy L. Endress. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, five children Cindy A. (Jeff) Bowman of Flinton and her children Scott, Jaime, Justin, Ashley and Jimmy; Ardell L., Jr. of Blandburg, and his children Dana and Ryan; Wayne A. of Blandburg, and his son Andrew; Debbie L. (Herman) Himes of LaCrosse, FL. and their daughter Melissa and Lisa M. (Chuck) Johns of Blandburg and their children Kiley and Brandon; and nineteen great-grandchildren and one on the way in October. He is also survived by a sister Gwendolyn Heidler and brother-in-law, Rev. Eugene, of Mifflintown and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his mother-in-law and father-in-law Harry and Gretta Endress, three brothers: Harold Briggs, Donald Smith and Samuel Smith and his sister Betty Morningstar.

Putsy was a 1953 graduate of Reade Township High School and retired in 1996 from PPG Industries, Tipton as a hot end furnace operator after 30 years of service.

Ardell was well-known in the community for his beautiful flower gardens in the summer, his Christmas light display in the winter, and his ability to bring laughter to everyone he met. He was also respected for his amazing woodworking skills. He enjoyed attending Altoona and Hollidaysburg basketball games, his koi fish pond, and he especially enjoyed spending time with his large, extended family. He was loved by so many and will be greatly missed.

Friends will be received 2-4 & 6-8 Friday and 10 am until the hour of funeral services of 11 am Saturday at the McQuown Funeral Home, Glasgow with Rev. H. Lee Ritchey officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Glasgow. Arrangements by McQuown Funeral Home, Glasgow.

In lieu of flowers and in honor of his brother Sammy, memorial contributions may be made to The Arc of Blair County (for individuals with developmental disabilities), 431 Jackson Ave., Altoona, PA. 16602 or to The Miracle League of Blair County (provides baseball for all children with special needs), PO Box 1091, Altoona, PA. 16603.

We can't know why some things happen, but we can know that love and beautiful memories outlast the pain of grief. And we can know that there's a place inside the heart where love lives always, and where nothing beautiful can ever be forgotten. Author Unknown.
